EHS has confirmed that the sewerage system in Portballintrae is
non-compliant and that NI Water must upgrade the system.

NI Water has stated that work is to start on a £9 million upgrade of
the Waste Water Treatment Works in Bushmills in July 2008.
Portballintrae will be connected in by new sewer lines and an new
upgraded pumping station. The system will be designed to give
tertiary treatment to the water which is the highest quality
treatment available. This will not only protect the Bush River and
its fish stock but will ensure that our beaches will be safe and
clean for all life forms.

The project is expected to be finished and online by 2010.
The EHS (Environment and Heritage Service of Northern Ireland)
has informed us that as of 2008 the Salmon Rock, formerly known
as the Beach Hotel beach, will be formally identified as bathing
water.

The 2 other beaches in the village, the Main Bay and Runkerry
Strand, will not be included as the EHS has said that usage levels
were "insufficient".

We will keep trying to have all the beaches in the village formally
recognized.
