On 7 June 2008 at 2 p.m. Portballintrae in conjunction with
Coleraine Borough Council will be holding a joint clean up of
the main beach at Portballintrae Harbour. Jim Allen, of
Coleraine Borough Council and the coordinator of the event
said, "The event will not only highlight the problem of
marine debris and beach litter in general but specifically the
impacts of this form of pollution on marine and coastal
biodiversity including tourism and visitor experience. I
believe that we can maximise our contribution to the event
by focusing on certain parts of the debris that we recover
and remove. I have done a minor study in the bay on the
amounts and types of waste associated with recreational
fishing/angling e.g. line, lures, bait bags etc. We can also
survey the amounts of plastic bags that we recover and in so
doing contribute to Council's efforts to target certain
polluters."
Council will be supplying all the necessary gloves and
collection bags. All you need to do is come along. It is not
only a chance to beautify our main beach, but you can meet
your neighbours and have some fun.
